Architecture Firm
The Familiar and Unfamiliar in Twentieth-Century Architecture by Jean La Marche, X This ambitious study uses the concept of the familiar and the avant-garde practice of defamiliarization to reexamine some of the most important buildings of the twentieth century. In approaching the history of twentieth-century Western architecture from the perspective of the architectural subject--the person architects imagine experiencing their work--Jean La Marche reveals new insights into the ways humans are imagined in relation to architecture. The Familiar and the Unfamiliar in Twentieth-Century Architecture examines the work--written and built--of four seminal twentieth-century architects and firms: Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Aldo Rossi, and the partnership of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown. In separate chapters devoted to analyzing the early writings and architecture of each architect or firm, La Marche uncovers assumptions that each makes about the ways they expect their works to be experienced. Matching the texts the architects wrote with the buildings they were designing contemporaneously, he focuses on the language employed in discussing the subject to reveal the author-architects' distinct voices and points of view. La Marche engages these four analyses to expound on some of the more pressing issues of late twentieth-century architectural theory. In addressing how the meaning of the familiar and the unfamiliar are altered when we imagine the influence architecture can have on its subjects, La Marche provides a fresh framework for delineating the politics and ethics of the discipline.
Fresh Facts: The Best Buildings by Young Dutch Architects by NAi Publishers, Dutch architecture currently stands at the center of worldwide attention. Firms like OMA, MVRDV, UN Studio, Neutelings Riedijk, and Claus and Kaan are now firmly ensconced in the international architecture scene, their lectures, exhibitions, and publications constantly raising the banner of Dutch design cultures higher and higher. While architects in other countries often have to wait years to admire, and be admired for, their first built work, their young Dutch colleagues are given opportunity after opportunity to turn their designs into buildings. The Netherlands Architecture Institute saw this as an inducement to inaugurate a new architecture award, to be awarded every two years to the best structure built by a young Dutch architectural firm. On the shortlist for this first award are buildings by VMX Architecten, NL. Architecten, Korteknie Stuhlmacher Architecten, MVRDV, and Rene van Zuuk Architecten. Their projects were presented at the Dutch pavillion during the 2002 Venice Biennale.
